Story time: Black History Month

Inclusion, diversity, and representation are terms that we all hear a lot in Grand Rapids. No matter the color of your skin, it is important to see yourself presented in books and television. So in celebration of black history month, I am sharing 5 books about black and brown boys and girls. There will be a link for each book for multiple places to purchase.





1.Have You Thanked An Inventor Today? By Patrice McLaurin

Suggested Age: 5-12
This book is about a little boy who highlights different inventions that he uses throughout his day that was invented by African-Americans. The book includes brief biographies about each inventor as well as fun activities to promote and encourage reading comprehension.

Suggested Age: 6 and up
This book is a part of a New York Times bestselling series, Rebel Girls. This book highlight 100 black girls and women who broke barriers and showcases black girl magic.

3. Keena Ford and the Secret Journal Mix-Up by Melissa Thomson
Suggested Age: 6-8
This is the third book in the Keena Fors series. In this book, Keena accidentally leaves her beloved journal at a friend's house. The friend threatens to tell all of Keens's secrets. Keena has to find a way to get her journal back and make things right with her friend.

Suggested age: 8-12
This Newberry Honor novel is about three sisters who travel to Oakland, California to meet the mother who abandoned them.

5. The Power in Words: An Empowering Guide to Speaking With Purpose by Meaghan Axel
Suggested age: 4-10
This book teaches children that their words matter. If you are looking for a book to help your kids make mindful choices about the way they speak this is a good starting place. The book highlights broken promises, gossip, and unkind words.

This book is a careful examination of the school-to-prison pipeline. It highlights a boy's journey of fighting against racism and bullying.
